Nowadays, Coimbra suffers from a division, which hinders sustainable management of its resources by two maternities, namely the maternity ward of the Instituto Maternal Bissaya Barreto and the Maternidade Daniel de Matos. For this reason, the objective of the city, as well as this dissertation, is the conceptualization of a new maternity that is the result not only of the fusion of the pre-existing ones but also a reflection on its future, from the spatial and the programmatic level. The norm of maternities, as establishments, is in the vast majority of cases an extension of a hospital environment, with the connotation of illness, pain and urgency. This happens, perhaps, as a result of a priority given over time to the object and the technique. In such a way that, at times, the human character that was once guaranteed in the family space of the house is lost. Hence, a desire is developed to give back the protagonism to the parturient, and therefore to the baby, with spaces that foster and enable their choices to create a childbirth experience appropriate to their wishes. Therefore, this dissertation seeks to develop an intervention in the complex of the Instituto Maternal Bissaya Barreto, in order to promote the expansion and update of its program/space. In order to make it possible, the creation, in this location, a deshospitalization of the maternity, with the potential to be able to respond to the needs of its different actors, in the present, and possible needs, in the future. |
