Janela da Mente - A Influência da Arquitetura na Saúde Mental

Abstract

A Arquitetura das Instituições Psiquiátricas tem passado por um longo processo de grandes mudanças em função da adaptação dos tratamentos aos novos princípios da Reforma Psiquiátrica. A Humanização do ambiente hospitalar e a reinserção dos doentes na sociedade estão entre as principais recomendações. Atualmente, a principal preocupação é afastar o aspeto hostil e institucional que sempre predominou neste tipo de edifícios, dotando-os de características que os aproximem de modelos habitacionais. Para tal, é necessário desenvolver espaços que substituam ou reabilitem os antigos modelos asilares. Esta Dissertação pretende relacionar, do ponto de vista do arquiteto, a Arquitetura com a Psiquiatria, encontrando um ponto de convergência em que uma surge como ferramenta complementar da outra. Para uma melhor compreensão do vínculo entre a Ciência e a Arte, a investigação iniciou-se com um estudo teórico. Posteriormente foram escolhidos, como casos de estudo, quatro hospitais psiquiátricos contemporâneos distribuídos pela Europa. As visitas às obras de referência compõem a principal parte do trabalho. Através de uma experiência que assume duas dimensões distintas: a viagem física, desde Inglaterra até à Alemanha, passando, por entre fiordes, pela Noruega e a Dinamarca; e a viagem sensorial, pelo interior dos hospitais. Começando no tradicional Hospital Bethlem Royal, seguindo para Kronstad, e daí para Slagelse, terminado no centro alemão de Friedrichshafen.Usando esta Viagem física e sensorial como ferramenta e o Espírito como operário, convido todos os professores, alunos e curiosos a abrir a Janela da Mente e a embarcar, numa jornada, que procura compreender a influência da Arquitetura na Saúde Mental e combater estigmatização prevalecente, em relação ao tema.

The Architecture of Psychiatric Institutions has been through a long process of huge changes in function of adapting the treatments to the new principles of the Psychiatric Reform. The Humanization of the hospital space design and the reintegration of patients into society are among the main recommendations. At present, the main concern is to remove the hostile and institutional aspect that has always prevailed in this type of buildings, giving them characteristics that bring them closer to housing models. To this end, it is necessary to develop spaces to replace or rehabilitate old asylum models.This Dissertation aims to relate, from the architect's point of view, the Architecture with Psychiatry, finding a point of convergence in which one emerges as a complementary tool of the other. For a better understanding of the link between Science and Art, the investigation began with a theoretical study. Subsequently, four contemporary psychiatric hospitals throughout Europe were selected as case studies. The visits to the reference works composes the main part of the work. Through an experience that takes on two distinct dimensions: the physical journey, from England to Germany, passing between the fjords in Norway and Denmark; and sensory travel, inside the hospitals. Starting at the traditional Bethlem Royal Hospital, following to Kronstad, then to Slagelse, and finally in the German center of Friedrichshafen.Using this physical and sensory Journey as a tool and the Spirit as a worker, I invite all teachers, students and curious to open the Window of the Mind and embark on a journey that seeks to understand the influence of architecture on mental health, and to fight the prevailing stigmatization related to the subject.
