Introduction: Studies have shown that negative attitudes and conditioned beliefs related to sexuality have a negative impact on sexuality and predispose to an increase in high-risk sexual behaviour. Anxiety and depression have also been related to a higher risk of developing this kind of behaviour. This study aims to explore the relationship between the presence of anxiety and/or depressive symptoms with the existence of negative attitudes, conditioned beliefs and high-risk behaviour regarding sexuality, in adolescents. Methods: Participants recruitment took place between November 2018 and January 2019 at the Adolescents Psychiatry Clinic of HP-CHUC, The survey was composed by informed consent form, sociodemographic questionnaire, Questionnaire of Attitudes and Beliefs about Sexuality and Sexual Education (QACSES), Revised Manifest Anxiety Scale for Children (RCMAS) and Children's Depression Inventory (CDI). QACSES uses three factors: Beliefs associated with gender and contraception (F1), Beliefs associated with violence in relationships, gender and sexual behaviour (F2) and Beliefs associated with the romantic relationship (F3). Statistical analysis in SPSS 22. Results: The study included 58 adolescents, 31 boys and 27 girls, with a median age of 15 years (IQR 3). The sample did not show high levels of negative attitudes and sexual beliefs in F1 (median 10,5, IQR 7), F2 (median 16, IQR 7) and F3 (median 6, IQR 3). It showed high levels of anxiety (median 18, IQR 9) and moderate levels of depression (median 13, IQR 13). A statistically significant relationship between F1 and F2 (p<0,001) and RCMAS and CDI (p<0,001) was found. Age is related with F1 (p=0,003), F2 (p=0,017) and F3 (p=0,012). Gender influences F3 (p=0,046). Bissexuality influences F1 (p=0,030) and F2 (p=0,047), whereas lesbian, gay or bisexual only influences F1 (p=0,033). Regarding access to information on sexuality, the family protects for F3 (p=0,015), school for F2 (p=0,045) and other sources for F1 (p=0,047).Discussion: Ths study showed that adolescents with more anxiety-trait symptoms and with moderate levels of depressive symptoms did not present with higher prevalence of negative beliefs related with gender and contraception, violence in relationships, sexual behaviour according to gender or associated with romantic relationships. Conclusion: The present study does not support the relationship between anxiety and/or depressive symptoms and an increased risk for negative attitudes and conditioned beliefs regarding sexuality. However, the authors find premature to assume these premises and generalise them to all adolescents with anxiety-trait and depressive symptoms.Key-words: Beliefs; attitudes; sexuality; sexual education; anxiety; depression; adolescents.
