Background: Narrative-based Medicine (NbM) is often described as "listening to the patient's story". Good communication skills are essential for GPP consultation, as it has led to a deeper communication between doctor and patient. There are few portuguese publications on this subject. Objective: Find out if the medical students of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC) have knowledge of several skills to practice MbN.Methods: An observational study was carried out in the student population of the clinical years (4th, 5th and 6th) of the FMUC Integrated Master's Degree in the 2018-2019 school year. An original questionnaire on MbN skills was drawn up and distributed by students for self-completion, anonymously and confidential. Subsequently, the data were analyzed and the responses compared to the year they attended, to the gender and to the future speciality perspective. Results: In a sample of n = 417, more responses were obtained in female sex (n = 282, 67.6%). The questionnaire responses showed a high degree of agreement for the items that lead to an empathic consultation and a high degree of disagreement for the items that least lead to an empathic consultation. By sex, we verified statistically significant differences, obtaining more "Totally Agree" answers in the items of skills for the practice of MbN in female sex. By year of attendance, in the 4th and 5th years, more "Totally Agree" answers were obtained in the items of skills for the practice of MbN. The variable future specialty perspective did not show significant differences. Are not familiar with the concept of MbN 43.6% of the students.Discussion and conclusion: Differences in responses between sexes show that female students may have a greater sensitivity than male students in relation to issues of emotion and MbN, which may result in a better understanding and communication, positively influencing the doctor-patient relationship. Despite the differences between sexes and the attending years, students demonstrate theoretical knowledge of MbN skills. Being familiar with the MbN concept has determined better response environments when being with the sick person.
