Introduction and objectives - Oral breathing is considered a risk factor for malocclusion, as it alters the physiological balance of growth, leading to morphological changes in dental and craniofacial parameters. There is an imbalance between the forces exerted by several muscles and the affected individuals have a greater tendency to posterior rotation of the mandible, with an increase of the lower anterior facial height and a decrease of the posterior facial height, characteristics frequently associated with mandibular retrognathia and open bite .Materials and methods - A total of 45 children, attending Orthodontic consultations were evaluated regarding oral breathing, systemic diseases, craniofacial, dental and functional alterations using the PNIF, the SNOT-22 questionnaire and the ROMA index. Results - An association between oral breathing and class II of Angle, middle palate, open bite, and maxillary hyperdevelopment or mandibular hypodevelopment were verified. No statistically significant differences were found between dental crowding, maxillary hypodevelopment or mandibular hyperdevelopment, anterior and posterior crossbite, and vertical overbite greater than 5 with oral breathing.Discussion and conclusions – All the patients in this study had poor respiratory function, although mainly nasal. Therefore, the etiological factors must be assessed and a multidisciplinary treatment must be conducted. Parameters that present a statistically significant difference with oral breathing are characteristic of patients who are open-mouthed to breathe, leading in particular to a posterior position of the mandible. These individuals should be correctly assessed for causal factors and treated accordingly.
