Expressões Arquitetónicas do Lazer - O papel do SESC no desenho da cidade de São Paulo

Abstract

O Serviço Social do Comércio (SESC), instituição paraestatal brasileira, criada em 1946 e em atividade até os dias de hoje, destaca-se como um exemplo ímpar da relação entre política, arquitetura e bem-estar social. Foi fundada com o intuito de apoiar os trabalhadores do setor do comércio, mas ao longo de sua história foi abrindo portas para a restante comunidade. Por estar presente em todos os estados brasileiros, a pesquisa focou-se na atuação da instituição no estado de São Paulo, região que apresenta o maior número de unidades e algumas das mais relevantes. Propõe-se analisar momentos específicos da sua história, a sua formação, a icónica obra de Lina Bo Bardi que se tornou modelo institucional, e as mais recentes unidades, tendo como objetivos perceber de que forma os espaços criados por esta instituição se apresentam na sociedade e as valências que trazem para a cidade de São Paulo.Por meio de estudo de desenhos dos edifícios selecionados, livros, teses, artigos e entrevistas e conferências em formato vídeo, procedeu-se a observação da sua evolução e os temas incorporados nas diferentes épocas. Constatou que num momento inicial a instituição sofreu influências de instituições assistencialistas desenvolvidas na Europa, que tinham o lazer como ponto chave. No caso brasileiro a sua atuação começa mais focada nas questões de saúde, mas a temática do lazer foi ganhando espaço nas suas prioridade.Conclui que apesar da influência das instituições europeias, o SESC afasta-se do modelo típico de colónia de férias utilizado na Europa e adquiri a sua própria identidade. A evolução programática conduziu a mudanças da sua arquitetura mas é também de enorme relevância a abertura da instituição para a comunidade, criando assim espaços cada vez mais democrático e integrados na cidade. Conclui ainda que algumas temáticas introduzidas em Pompeia permanecem nas novas unidades, no entanto as experiências criadas são diferentes uma vez que as próprias configurações dos edifícios são diferentes, tendo desta forma, de serem adaptadas.

The Brazilian parastatal institution Social Service of Commerce or SESC (Portuguese: Serviço Social do Comércio (SESC)), created in 1946 and operating to this day, stands out as a peerless example of the relationship between politics, architecture and social well-being. It was founded to provide assistance to workers in the commerce sector but over time widened its scope to the rest of the community. Because this institution is present in every Brazilian state, the research focuses on São Paulo state where they have the greatest number of units as well as some of their most relevant. It is proposed to analyze specific moments of its history, formation, the iconic work of Lina Bo Bardi who became an institutional model, and its most recent units with the goal of understanding how the spaces created by this institution present themselves in society and the added value they bring to the city of São Paulo.Through the study of drawings of the selected buildings, books, theses, articles and interviews and video conferences its evolution and themes incorporated in different times were observed. It was noted that initially the institution was influenced by European welfare institutions that focused on leisure. In the Brazilian case however, the focus was on health but the leisure theme became a growing priority over time.It is concluded that despite the influence of the European institutions, the SESC moves away from the typical holiday camp model used in Europe and gains its own identity. The pragmatic evolution lead to changes in the architecture but opening itself to the community is also highly relevant by creating evermore democratic spaces integrated into the city. It is furthermore concluded that some of the themes introduced in Pompeia still remain in the new units, however the experiences created are different due to the need to adapt them to the different building configurations.
