Questões de Tradução Técnica – A influência do cliente na qualidade da tradução

Abstract

Enquanto relatório de estágio, este trabalho visa descrever a experiência adquirida no estágio curricular que teve lugar na empresa de tradução L10N Studio, Lda. entre 11 de setembro de 2017 e 23 de fevereiro de 2018, relacionando-a com questões teóricas debatidas durante as aulas do Mestrado em Tradução.Uma vez que esta experiência marcou o meu primeiro contacto com a tradução num contexto profissional, surgiram naturalmente problemas que não tinham sido abordados no contexto académico. Apesar de a teoria da tradução ter sido abordada mais aprofundadamente durante as aulas do mestrado, não teve o papel central que julguei que iria ter no desenvolvimento do meu trabalho, uma vez que surgiram novos desafios que me obrigaram a criar novas soluções. À medida que o estágio foi avançando, foi-se tornando cada vez mais óbvio que o cliente, enquanto responsável pelo início do processo tradutivo, acaba por ter um papel preponderante no modo como esse processo evolui. Consequentemente, o próprio trabalho do tradutor é fortemente influenciado pelo cliente, tanto positiva como negativamente (apesar de o impacto negativo ter sido aquele que afetou o meu trabalho mais acentuadamente). No âmbito do trabalho que desenvolvi durante os cinco meses de estágio, essa influência manifestou-se essencialmente através do envio (ou falta dele) dos materiais necessários, tais como guias de estilo, documentos de referência, memórias de tradução e bases terminológicas, e da explicitação de requisitos específicos do cliente, tais como, por exemplo, a não tradução de determinados termos/expressões, bem como as expressões fixas que, apesar de traduzidas, não deveriam ser alteradas, como é o caso de cargos e funções. O objetivo do presente relatório é analisar estas questões e compreender de que modo é que os problemas poderão eventualmente ser resolvidos ou, pelo menos, atenuados, bem como refletir acerca do modo como eles influenciaram a minha evolução enquanto tradutora.

This report aims to describe the experience that I acquired during my internship which took place in the translation company L10N Studio, Lda. between 11 September 2017 and 23 February 2018, and establish a relationship between that experience and the theoretical questions that were discussed during the Master’s in Translation.As this experience marked my first contact with translation at a professional level, I encountered new problems which hadn’t been addressed at an academic level. Even though the translation theory had been approached in a more detailed way during the Master's in Translation, it did not have the central role I thought it would have on the evolution of my work, as there were new challenges which forced me to come up with new solutions. As the internship continued, the fact that the client, being the main responsible for the translation process, has a key role in the evolution of this process began to look more obvious. Therefore, the translator’s own work is strongly influenced by the client, both positively and negatively (although the negative impact was the one which influenced my work the most). Within the scope of the work I developed throughout the five months of the internship, that influence mainly was manifested by the client’s own necessary documents (or lack thereof), such as style guides, references, translation memories and term bases, and their specific requirements, for example, regarding words/phrases which shouldn’t be translated, as well as fixed phrases which despite being translated, could not be changed. The purpose of this report is to analyse these matters and understand in what way those problems may potentially be solved or perhaps diminished, as well as reflect on their impact on my evolution as a translator.
