Most of the psychopathy research has been concerned about the etiology of the construct, in order to make its definition more robust (Hare, 2003; Patrick, Fowels & Krueger, 2009). It seems consistent in the literature that psychopathy is multidetermined, constituted by several biopsychosocial factors, such as genetic determinants (Bezdjian et al., 2011; Viding et al., 2008), environmental and emotional factors (Christian et al., 2016, 2018; Fisher & Brown, 2018; Gao et al., 2010), and facets of normal personality (Miller et al., 2001; Vachon et al., 2013). However, the results of the research seem to be unclear and sometimes even contradictory about the phenomena that best predicts psychopathy (Berg et al., 2013). Psychopathic traits are not exclusive to clinical and forensic populations, and it is therefore important to access their presence in the community (Hare, 2003; Reidy et al., 2015).In this regard, the main issue of this study is to understand to what extent attachment and the various personality factors can influence the expression of psychopathic traits in adults of the general population. Insecure attachment as long been associated with the several forms of psychopathology (Bakermans-kranenburg & van IJzendorn, 2009; Lyddon & Sherry, 2001), as well as evidence of its influence on psychopathy (Conradi et al., 2015; Mack, Hackney & Pyle, 2011). On the other hand, the question of personality reveals itself in relation to psychopathy from the most classical theories (e.g. Cleckley, 1988; Kraepelin, 1905) to the present-day approaches (e.g. Hare & Neumann, 2008), specially related to the big five fundamental factors of trait theory (e.g. Miller & Lynam, 2015).In order to carry out the study of this relationship, we used the following self-response instruments: Experiences in Close Relationships (ECR); Adult Attachment Scale (AAS), both measures of attachment; the Self-Report Psyhopathy Scale (SRP-III), constituting the measure of psychopathy; and the NEO Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), related to personality. The protocol of this study was put online to make the sample random about sex and age, two variables that seems to be relevant and to influence psychopathy (Dolan & Völm, 2009; Gill & Crino, 2012; Wernke & Huss, 2008).In brief, the results show that the dimensions of attachment, in a general way, have weak relations with the construct of psychopathy, demonstrating that the personality factors are more determinant, because it assumes more detailed associations regarding the psychopathic traits. In addition, it is noted an influence of the gender variable on the interaction of the dimensions and factors in relation to psychopathy. However, this study presents some limitations, such as the abnormal distribution of the subjects by age and sex, so it is recommended to consider criteria for homogeneity of the groups under study in following investigations.
