The company Ansell Portugal, based in Vila Nova de Poiares, manufactures protection gloves. Some of those are coated with rubber. This coating is made by diving the gloves into a rubber mixture, inside an immersion tank, which is composed with an entry located at the bottom. The fluid exits the tank through spillways at the laterals. Some gloves, at the previous process mentioned, are rejected due to an inconsistent coating. If the inlet flow rate is high, a swell appears in the fluid free surface. In some tanks, the swell even oscillates. But, if the inlet flow rate is low, a flat free surface is obtained, but there appear darker spots, composed of drier rubber that drop from the gloves. With this work, it is intended the simulation of the flow inside these immersion tanks used in the manufacturing of protection gloves, in order to annul the swell and at the same time provide a good feeding of all tank zones. An initial validation of the numerical model is made, testing several RAS turbulence models, meshes and adapting other parameters, such as convergence criteria. Those results are benchmarked with real data. To improve the flow and minimize the number of rejected gloves, several deflector geometries are studied. Different plane plates are tested in 2D simulations. Also, a semi-spherical deflector is implemented in 3D simulations and an identical cylindrical deflector is implemented in 2D simulations. This work was made using the software OpenFOAM®, which is free. It's code is also open source.
