Given the recent attention to the exponential increase in the use of Internet as a routine that implies serious changes in the working patterns of its users (Ceyhan, 2011), the need to construct a measure that understands and evaluates the reasons that contributed to this widespread use of the Internet arises. The aim of this study is to understand the functionality that Internet use has in everyday life and the type of emotional regulation it can provide to its users. Therefore, this study is based on a Functional Evolutionary Analysis, taking into account the evolutionary model of Gilbert (1989, 2000, 2014), and his Theory of Social Mentalities and Systems of Affective Regulation. The Internet Use Functions Scale (EFUInt) is an instrument consisting of 49 items, with 5 response possibilities between 1 (Almost Never) and 5 (Almost Always). A total of 858 adults, 357 males (41.6%) and 501 females (58.4%), aged between 20 and 59, participated in this study.Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) performed on a sample of 400 individuals pointed to a seven factor model. The Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), performed in the other sam-ple with 458 subjects, confirmed the structure obtained in the EFA, through good indexes of the quality of adjustment, factorial weights and adequate individual reliability, and convergent validity comparing to other measures. Cronbach's alpha values showed good internal consistency. The scale also revealed the existence of high correlations between the factors.EFUInt is a valid tool to be used in future investigations to understand the functions of Internet use. This allows a better knowledge about the affection regulation systems and social mentalities that underlie the tasks related to the Internet and its excessive use. The scale assumes relevance in the evaluation and prevention of Internet related pathologies and in the development of comprehensive Third Generation intervention programs with youth and adults.
