A Questão do Relativismo na Teoria da Argumentação de Stephen Toulmin.

Abstract

Esta dissertação procura capturar o espírito da obra de Stephen Toulmin e, particularmente, examinar a relação desse pensamento com a questão do relativismo: o que implica refletir sobre a maneira como o autor, no contexto da pós-modernidade, procura, através da Retórica e da Argumentação, preservar a matriz universalista característica da filosofia moderna. O trabalho encontra-se dividido por três capítulos, cada qual, refletindo uma fase distinta do pensamento do autor. A fragmentação proposta não pretende ser definitiva nem exclui a possibilidade de interpretações alternativas. O primeiro capítulo é dedicado à teoria da argumentação e ao ‘modelo de Toulmin’ apresentado em Os Usos do Argumento. A questão do relativismo coloca-se aí, um pouco à revelia do pensamento do próprio Toulmin, na medida em que o problema não havia sido equacionado pelo autor nessa fase. Não deixa, porém, de ser pertinente aferir as consequên¬cias da teoria divulgada em 1958, especialmente na medida em que a obra em questão visa promover uma reforma da Lógica enquanto ferramenta aplicada na análise de argumentos, e que essa ambição só poderia ser bem sucedida tendo a problemática do relativismo sido devidamente equacionada. O segundo capítulo é dedicado ao exame das obras Compreensão Humana e Conhecer e Agir, nas quais a teoria da argumentação reverte numa tese mais ampla sobre a racionalidade humana. Nesta segunda fase do pensamento do autor, a questão do relativismo aparece já no centro das suas preocupações. Em Conhecer e Agir, o autor empenha-se na elaboração de uma conceção filosófica, unificada, do estudo da racionalidade, integrando o contributo conjunto de três modelos distintos de argumentação, ou paradigmas da racionalidade – o modelo geométrico, o antropológico e o crítico. Toulmin procurou fornecer, nas obras mencionadas, verdadeiras fundações filosóficas para poder enquadrar os empreendimentos racionais no seu conjunto – que, para o autor, envolvem tanto o domínio prático como o teórico. A fase madura do pensamento de Toulmin aparece exposta em Cosmopolis e em Retorno à Razão, que analisamos ao longo do último capítulo, no qual, incluímos a conclusão do trabalho. Nesta última etapa, as consequências do relativismo adquirem contornos, porventura, menos problemáticos à luz de um modelo evolucionário do conhecimento do que seria de esperar, tendo em conta o descrédito de que haviam sido alvo os pressupostos fundacionalistas da filosofia moderna, que guardavam o mérito de proporcionar verdadeiros alicerces universais para os empreendimentos da razão.

This essay aims to portray the spirit of Stephen Toulmin’s work and, specifically, to examine the relationship between his though and the question of relativism – a task which implies a reflection about the way the author tries, in a post-modern context, to preserve the universalist current that characterises modern philosophy. This paper is divided into three chapters, each one dedicated to a distinct phase of the author’s thought. This proposed fragmentation is not intended to be definitive, neither does it eschew the possibility of alternative interpretations. The first chapter delves into argumentation theory and “Toulmin’s model” as presented in The Uses of Argument. The relativist question is present here, even if unbeknownst to the author, since he had not yet addressed the problem at the time. It is still pertinent, nevertheless, to gauge the consequences of the thesis presented in 1958, specially given that it concerns itself with a reform of Logic as an applied tool for argument analysis, and that such a reform could only happen successfully after the relativism problematic had been satisfactorily equated. The second chapter is dedicated to examining Human Understanding and Knowing and Acting, in which argumentation theory expands into a wider thesis about human rationality. In the second phase of his though, the author keeps the relativism question at the core of his reflections. In Knowing and Acting, the author applies his efforts to create an unified philosophical conception of the study of rationality, integrating the joint contributions from there distinct models of argumentation, or paradigms of rationality - the geometric, anthropological and critical models. Toulmin tried to offer, in the works mentioned above, true philosophical foundations to frame the rational undertakings as a whole - endeavours that, for the author, imply both the practical and the theoretical domains. The fully formed phase of Toulmin’s though is exposed in Cosmopolis and Return to Reason, which we will analyse in the last chapter – where we will also include our conclusions. In this last step, the consequences of relativism turn up to be, perhaps, less problematic when under the light of an evolutionary model of knowledge than what we were led to believe, taking into account the derision faced by the presupposed founding fathers of modern philosophy, that kept for themselves the merit of offering the true universal foundations for rational endeavours.
