O contributo das Bibliotecas Públicas Portuguesas para as Humanidades Digitais

Abstract

Este estudo apresentada uma reflexão sobre o papel das bibliotecas públicas, enquanto instituições de salvaguarda do património documental e bibliográfico e da história da comunidade local, no mundo digital e na investigação académica. A literatura consultada permite verificar que os investigadores em humanidades privilegiam o acesso a fontes primárias, aos documentos que transmitem, em primeira mão, as ideias, os saberes, os costumes e comportamentos da Humanidade. E, as bibliotecas públicas, as instituições detentoras da custódia da memória de uma comunidade que se concretiza através de uma política de gestão de coleções especiais, nomeadamente, Fundo Local e Fundo Antigo, são fornecedoras de conteúdos para as humanidades digitais. Perante a dificuldade em delimitar o termo humanidades digitais, percebe-se que estamos perante um novo paradigma no modo de investigar nas ciências sociais e humanas e onde se estabelece uma relação de simbiose entre as práticas de investigação das humanidades e as tecnologias digitais. Sendo que, neste processo de investigação, criam-se condições para a contribuição e enriquecimento da história da comunidade local, através da agregação dos resultados da investigação à coleção especial. O objetivo geral do trabalho é analisar o posicionamento das bibliotecas portuguesas nas humanidades digitais. Assim, a investigação parte da questão: existe nas bibliotecas públicas portuguesas um processo estruturado na gestão das coleções especiais com reflexo para a investigação nas humanidades digitais? Para cumprir com o objetivo deste trabalho, foi efetuada uma análise às práticas vigentes nas bibliotecas públicas portuguesas para a disponibilização das coleções especiais no mundo digital. Para tal, partiu-se do universo de bibliotecas públicas e municipais portuguesas, selecionou-se um método que permitisse fornecer a informação necessária para fazer uma pesquisa integral. Seguiu-se o método da observação direta e análise descritiva dos dados. Conclui-se neste trabalho que as bibliotecas públicas devem olhar além do papel tradicional de recolha e organização das suas coleções. No momento em que se promovem debates para refletir sobre o futuro das bibliotecas públicas e sobre as novas competências dos seus profissionais, o presente trabalho apresenta um ponto da situação no que diz respeito às práticas das bibliotecas públicas portuguesas na disseminação das coleções especiais em ambiente digital. Este estudo coloca em evidencia a importância das bibliotecas públicas nas humanidades digitais.

This paper is a reflection on the role of public libraries ascultural institutions that save documentary and bibliographic patrimony and history of the local community, in the digital world and in academic research. Academic literature shows that humanities researchers value the access to primary sources that transmit mankind ideas, knowledge, customs and behavior. Public libraries institutions are keepers of community memory, that it is materialized through special collection - Local e Rare collection - and therefore they are the providers of contents and raw materials to the digital humanities. Given the difficulty in defining the term digital humanities, it is clear that we are facing a new paradigm in what concerns the social and human sciences research and which establishes a symbiotic relationship between research practices in the humanities and digital technologies. And in this investigation/research process, conditions are built to contribut to the nrichment of the local community history, through the aggregation of research results to the special collection are created (are developed).The main goal of this research is to analyze portuguese libraries role in digital humanities. Thus, the research is based on whether public libraries have a structured process in the management of special collections with an impact on scholarship in digital humanities. In order to comply with this objective, we analyzed the current practices in portuguese public libraries to make their special collections accessible in the digital world. This research is based on the universe of portuguese public and municipal libraries. In order to analyze the necessary information to make an global research, we chose the direct observation of digital platforms, followed by a descriptive data analysis.It is concluded in this work that public libraries should look beyond the traditional role of collecting and organizing their collections. At the moment debates are held to reflect on the future of public libraries and on the new skills of their professionals. The present work presents a situation regarding the practices of portuguese public libraries in the dissemination of special collections in digital environment. This study highlights the importance of public libraries in digital humanities.
