L’anthropologie de l’anthropocentrisme à l’anthropomorphisme: la question de l’humanité chez Eduardo Viveiros de Castro

Abstract

A antropologia é uma pesquisa moderna. Etimologicamente “saber sobre o homem”, ela é o nome de uma disciplina acadêmica criada no fim do século XVIII, mas também o de todo o horizonte de pesquisa que dá a ela o seu sentido, que podemos resumir nesta questão “O que é o homem? ”. A centralidade desta interrogação é a fonte e a consequência de uma Grande Divisão entre os humanos et os não-humanos, constitutivo do esquema ontológico e epistemológico da modernidade, o antropocentrismo. A disciplina antropológica pode neste contexto ser lida como um caso particular de uma antropologia filosófica, aquela que associa a questão do humano àquela do outro. Mas essa coabitação é perigosa: a humanidade dos outros nunca é evidente, nunca satisfatória, pois ao encontrar outros avatares dessa humanidade, se encontra ao mesmo tempo outras maneiras de semantizá-la. Pensar a humanidade dos outros não parece poder se resolver através da aplicação de critérios distintivos, mas através da escuta das suas próprias definições do que é ser humano. Se trata então de se perguntar qual é antropologia deles, isto é, o que é a antropologia do ponto de vista do outro? A única forma de responder de forma satisfatória à questão “O que é o homem? ” torna-se então o questionamento da própria questão e da sua problematização. Nós iremos vislumbrar neste trabalho de qual maneira uma alternativa contemporânea à pratica antropológica, abordada através do trabalho sobre o perspectivismo ameríndio do antropólogo brasileiro Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, reverte as categorias do pensar antropocêntrico e permite um reinvestimento filosófico fecundo da grande temática metafisica da humanidade.

Anthropology is a modern concern. Stemming from the etymology “the knowledge of man”, it is the name of an academic discipline born in the late eighteenth century as well as the line of questioning that gives it its purpose, that one might resume by the question “What is man?”. The central importance of this question is both the source and the consequence of a Great Divide between humans and non-humans, responsible for the ontological and epistemological model so dear to modernity : anthropocentrism. Anthropology, as an academic and intellectual discipline, can be seen as a way of approaching a form of philosophical anthropology, that combines the question of man with that of alterity, of the Other. But this combination is not without risk : the humanity of the Other is never obvious, never satisfying, because as one encounters other embodiments of this humanity, one also encounters new ways of defining it. Understanding the humanity of other societies cannot be achieved through simply applying a given set of criterions, but seemingly by listening to what the Other calls “being human”. The question is thus what their anthropology might be, what anthropology is from their point of view. The only way to adequately answer the question “what is man” is consequently to rethink the way the question is asked. In this paper, we will explore how a recent renewal of the practice of anthropology, seen through the lens of the Brazilian anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro's work on amerindian perspectivism, challenges and overturns the categories used to think in an anthropocentric way in order to philosophically reopen the major metaphysical issue of humanity.
