Hipertensão e envelhecimento

Abstract

A hipertensão arterial na população geriátrica continua a representar um desafio clínico, apesar dos importantes avanços nos últimos anos, sendo o principal fator de risco para doenças cardiovasculares. O envelhecimento da população, com o especial aumento da população octagenária, e a modificação dos estilos de vida, é responsável pelo aumento da incidência e prevalência da hipertensão e da subsequente morbimortalidade, com custos em Saúde e Apoio Social em crescendo. A evidência atual mostra o grande benefício do tratamento da hipertensão nesta população, com grande impacto na mortalidade e qualidade de vida, embora permaneçam questões importantes.

Arterial Hypertension in elderly people remains an important clinical challenge despite all the significant advances in the recent years, and is the main risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. The aging of population, specially the growing of the octogenarian group, and lifestyle modifications are responsible for the growing incidence and prevalence of hypertension and its implications in terms of morbidity and mortality, therefore leading to an ever growing need for healthcare and social support resources. There is now convincing evidence for the benefit of treating hypertension in the elderly and very elderly population, in terms of mortality and quality of life. Nevertheless, some important questions still need to be addressed.
