Mulheres na política: a luta pela igualdade de género e pela representatividade no parlamento escocês

Abstract

A Escócia é um dos países com maior percentagem de mulheres na sua política contemporânea. Não só por estar perto de atingir a igualdade de género no seu parlamento, assim como por, até muito recentemente, ter três mulheres líderes dos principais partidos – Nicola Sturgeon (partido nacional escocês), Kezia Dugdale (partido trabalhista escocês) e Ruth Davidson (partido conservador escocês) – dentro dos cinco partidos representados no parlamento escocês. Tal destaque na esfera política, levanta a questão: qual é o impacto da representação das mulheres no mais alto nível de política partidária do país? É, então, importante explorar noções de patriarcado e feminismo e qual a sua importância para as políticas de hoje em dia, assim como teorias feministas e o seu impacto na falta da paridade de género na representação política.Este relatório de estágio analisa as raízes do sistema patriarcal, a história das mulheres que lutaram pelos seus direitos no ramo politico, social e económico, assim como as conquistas alcançadas.Ao fazer entrevistas e trabalho de campo na Escócia, o meu trabalho empírico traz uma análise às políticas mundiais e da Escócia e considera em profundidade os seus programas para a igualdade de género. Também é importante entendermos as razões porque existem menos mulheres no ramo político e que medidas estão a ser tomadas para evitar a desigualdade. Este relatório de estágio procura entender em primeiro lugar, porque é que a Escócia atingiu um grau tão notável na representação política feminina e, em segundo lugar, como é que a contribuição dessas mulheres pode influenciar e promover a agenda de igualdade de género do país.

Scotland is one of the countries with some of the highest percentages of women in its contemporary politics. Not only because it is close to achieving a 50% gender equality percentage in parliament, but also because, until very recently, there were three women party leaders – Nicola Sturgeon (Scottish National Party), Kezia Dugdale (Scottish Labour Party) and Ruth Davidson (Scottish Conservative Party) – within the five parties represented in the Scottish parliament. Such prominence in the political sphere begs the question: what is the impact of the representation of women at the highest level of party politics in Scotland on the country’s political agenda? It is important to explore the notions of patriarchy and feminism and how are they important to today’s politics, as well as feminist theories and its impact on the lack of gender parity in political representation. This internship report analyses the roots of the patriarchal system, the history of women who fought for their rights in the political, social and economic field, as well as the conquests already achieved.By doing interviews and fieldwork in Edinburgh, Scotland, my empirical work brings an analysis of the world’s and Scottish politics and considers in depth their programs for gender equality. It is also a very important part of politics to understand with less women are going into the political world and what measures are being taken to tack inequality. This internship report seeks to understand first why Scotland has achieved such a noticeable status in female political representation and secondly how the contribution of these women can influence and promote the country’s gender equality agenda.
