Introduction: The use of vitamin supplements by the current society has undergone a very significant increase in the last decade. For this increased use, population over 50 years old has contributed enough. The elderly, as individuals with multiple pathologies and multiple medications, the possibility of overdose and drug interactions make it relevant to study the relation of these individuals with the use of vitamin supplements. In addition, the dispersion of the scientific literature, especially the findings of many studies in this area leads to a lack of reality of the physician, but also the user of this type of product. Objective: To review scientific literature of the past ten years and currently available on the use of vitamin supplements in the elderly population. Methods: For the present review article, the method used was the revision of the international medical literature on the topic, revisions or original studies, by searching on the PubMed database with the MESH terms "aged" and "vitamin supplements", defining how time interval between 2003 and 2013. Results: The relation between the use of vitamin supplements and the elderly population covers several topics. The user-type characterization of products of this kind is documented in most of the literature, either by different characteristics, or by habits and lifestyle, as well as supplements most used by them. Other topics of importance are the overdose, interactions with drugs, cognitive function, as well as the relation of the incidence of cardiovascular disease, cancer and total mortality with the use of vitamin supplements Discussion: The limitations to the analysis of different studies, as well as their comparison, are presented for different items. The problem of the definition of vitamin supplement, and the form, dose, and time-using are the limitations that are focused more times, making it difficult to extrapolate to the population. The food fortification, adopted by some countries, it is also subject of analysis by interfering in some studies. Regarding the relation of diseases and use of vitamin supplements, it is stressed the long latent period of cancer disease and the short follow-up of the study population. Conclusion: A variety of limitations makes it difficult to generalize the information advanced by different studies. The regulation of this kind of product is a first step to overcome these limitations. In addition, the sharing of information regarding the use of vitamin supplements should be fostered between the doctor and his patient. In future, in regards to scientific studies, emphasizes the importance of identifying vulnerable individuals to certain supplements, as well as the possibility of using combining nutrients to evaluate the risk in a disease
