The present dissertation was elaborated within the scope of the Masters in Themes of Developmental Psychology and develops a theme that involves the study of literacy, its concepts and evolution, as well as its contributions to learning in the environment of kindergarten. This research, carried out with parents/guardians and educators of pre-school children, aims to characterize the emergent literacy beliefs, practices and environments from the perspective of parents, analyzing the relationships between these aspects and also the role of sociodemographic conditions from parents. It also aims to learn about the concepts of early childhood educators and their practices for the development and promotion of literacy in kindergarten. It also intends to analyze the relationships between these concepts and practices and to investigate the influence of variables such as age, training and time of performance of the educators of childhood. Finally, this research intends to qualitatively compare, based on the descriptive results, the conceptions of the educators of infants and the conceptions of the parents on the learning of the reading and writing, as well as the importance that one and another attribute to the different institutions in the promotion of the literacy. The research work aims, therefore, to confront the statistical data of educators and parents to reach their contributions in the promotion of literacy. The study uses the quantitative method of empirical research, but also the qualitative analysis, to — based on statistical analysis and content analysis — present results regarding the conceptions and practices of literacy of educators and parents. To reach the proposed objectives, two studies were carried out, using two samples: one consisting of parents and caregivers (n = 291) of children attending Kindergarten (Study I); another formed by educators (n = 21) directly involved in pre-school education in the District of Coimbra (Study II). The data were collected through a survey, using self-administered instruments, of individual application, addressed to parents and educators, considering the specific characteristics of each group.Overall, in the sphere of family literacy, research reveals that most participants showed beliefs that reflect a holistic (versus technicist) dimension of their role in the learning process of reading and writing. With regard to “day-to-day practices”, the most used is the reading of advertising posters. In “entertainment practices”, reading stories is the most common practice. As for “practice reading and writing practice”, helping the child to say the name of the letters is the most used. Correlations were found between parents' beliefs and practices. Still on family literacy, the sociodemographic level and the qualifications of the mothers revealed some influences. The results also show that most educators stated that their activities in kindergartens are based on the Curriculum Guidelines for Pre-School Education (OCEPE) and that their literacy knowledge is adequate. Respondents also had a higher percentage in the “more holistic” (90.5%) and “very holistic” (9.5%) design, with no reference to “very technical” and “more technical” designs. In the classification with three categories of conceptions (technical, mixed, holistic), the majority considered the mixed categories (90.5%). It is also verified that a longer time of service in the current kindergarten is associated with more technical conceptions. In the preference of the educators for the development of reading and writing, the activities of emergent literacy practices prevailed. The educators working in the public network showed themselves with more holistic conceptions compared to those of the private network. Finally, we conclude that, in both parents and early childhood educators, there is a predominance of holistic conceptions. Although the types of literacy practices are different in these two groups, they attach a similar degree of importance to the institutions that make up the triad responsible for the promotion of literacy (Family, School and State), giving priority to family and school.
