Abstract: Population aging is a reality that is increasingly present today and poses challenges to society for which it is often not prepared. Aging manifests itself in the increase of chronic diseases which in turn leads to functional and cognitive dependence. Thus, there is an increase in institutionalization that is not always accompanied by an increase in the quality of services provided to the elderly leading to a severe emotional and physical depletion. It is therefore necessary to find strategies to promote active and healthy aging within institutions. Animal-assisted activities (AAA) have shown benefits in the institutionalized elderly, since they allow a break in the routine and isolation of these people, providing an increase in social interaction. AAA also decrease the symptoms of depression, anxiety and sadness allowing an improvement in quality of life. This dissertation has as main objective to evaluate the influence of AAA on the behavior of institutionalized elderly people, but also to verify if there is a positive evolution of the behaviors throughout the sessions and to compare the results between two institutions with different characteristics. An observational and quasi-experimental study was performed. The study sample consisted of 14 individuals living in two institutions, seven in each, with a mean age of 82.71 years. Behaviors related to positive emotions and social interaction were evaluated in AAA sessions and in sessions of another control activity. Behavioral analysis was performed in 10 minutes of each session based on video recordings, using The Observer XT 10.5 software.A longer duration of 'smiling', 'talking' and 'touching' behaviors and a higher frequency of 'laughing' behavior in AAA were observed. In the AAA, a positive evolution was observed throughout the sessions of 'smiling', 'laughing' and 'looking at the dog' behaviors. There were differences between institutions in positive emotions and in social interaction behaviors. This study thus contributes to the body of evidence showing that AAAs bring benefits to the institutionalized elderly, namely in the increase of positive emotions and social interaction behaviors.
