Nowadays the environmental concerns about energy consumption have been increasing because of the limited resources available on Earth. Therefore, it is important to identify where energy is wasted and study ways of reducing this energy consumption to contribute for an eco-friendly and sustainable development. It is known that part of the global energy consumption comes from the unnecessary outlay of buildings. Energy behaviour of a building depends on the quality of solutions used on its construction. This means that the global energy consumption of a building has a strict relation with the thermal quality of its active (energetic systems) and passive (transparent and opaque constructive solutions) elements. Therefore, buildings with more energy efficiency require higher acquisition and construction costs. For this reason, it is important the identification of what is the optimal compromise between the initial investment costs and the return achieved in terms of energy savings. With the elaboration of this work, it was pretended to relate the opaque construction solutions used on Portuguese buildings with the energy efficiency that they promote. For this purpose, it is used the concept of Equivalent Annual Cost (EAC) of the complete lifetime cycle (construction + exploration + demolition) of various types of buildings when located in three typical climatic regions of continental region of Portugal. It was intended to identify the solution with lower EAC and thus define the best construction solutions to build or refurbish Portuguese buildings. This study was carried out using market prices of thermal insulations, the Cype Price Generator (to calculate building elements prices), the CalProTerm spreadsheet (to determine the thermophysical properties of the constructive solutions) and the SEnergEd software (for simulation of building energy performance and calculation of CAE of its complete life cycle). The optimal construction solutions were identified, in terms of thickness and position of the thermal insulation, for five buildings types and for three distinct locations that characterize the weather of the continental region of Portugal. It was thus possible to identify the ideal solution to be applied in each situation (each pair typology of building / climatic region).eng
