Abstract: Acupuncture can be defined as an ancestral art used by the Chinese people for thousand of years as a system to prevent and treat multiple pathologies, like vascular, nervous, inflammatory, muscular and pain syndromes, among others. Many of its effects have been studied and proved right by several scientific studies, so acupuncture is increasingly being accepted as a medical field and considered a therapeutic approach, or, at least, as adjuvant line. About vascular diseases, we know that acupuncture improves cerebral post-stroke circulation, specifically in medial and anterior cerebral arteries, improving the prognosis and evolution of these patients. Likewise, several benefic effects in vascular dementia and vertebrobasilar insufficiency are known. It is also acknowledged that one of the main contributors to those vascular outcomes is nitric oxide (NO) released by endothelial cells, which creates vasodilation and improves blood flow, improving oxygenation and nutrient delivery to the tissues as well. In this work, we pretend to study puncture effect in three arteries of the right inferior limb – femoral, posterior tibial and dorsal artery of the foot – after dry puncture with a needle in Weizhong acupoint (BX 40) and subsequent measurement of arterial caliber with eco-Doppler before and after the puncture. This study was accomplished with 44 voluntaries, college students, presumably healthy, with ages between 18 and 29 years. The results were statistically significant (p < 0.05), with vasodilation occurring in the three studied vessels, increasingly greater, in percentage, as more peripheral the artery. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that the dry puncture of the Weizhong acupoint has a vasodilator effect in the vessels of the punctured limb.
