A Hotelaria Coimbrã dos anos 20: dos pequenos hotéis à utopia do Grande Hotel

Abstract

Esta dissertação tem como principal enfoque o Grande Hotel de Coimbra, projetado em 1921 pelo arquiteto Eduard Ferrés i Puig, e que constituiu à época um dos maiores projetos já alguma vez idealizados em território nacional. Mais do que um simples hotel, este projeto representava uma proposta ávida na modernização da cidade, por intermédio da edificação de um imóvel apetrechado com equipamentos de topo. O mesmo constituiu na época um dos edifícios mais aclamados e célebres, ocupando durante quatro anos a atenção da imprensa e das vozes locais. Contudo, contrariamente ao que a bibliografia do arquiteto menciona, o hotel acabou por não ser edificado. Este trabalho constrói o percurso para a compreensão do Grande Hotel de Coimbra. Assim, começa por abordar Portugal na transição do século, retratando os primórdios do turismo e respetivas estruturas hoteleiras. A análise de Coimbra e da sua Hotelaria na transição do século ocupa grande parte do trabalho, prestando-se atenção às tipologias da arquitetura hoteleira e à história das unidades que subsistem durante os anos 20. As mesmas consistem à época nas principais estruturas que ofereciam alojamento na zona centro do território, permitindo o desenvolvimento económico e cultural da cidade de Coimbra. Porém, apesar de existirem oito hotéis, os mesmos eram considerados poucos para a grande procura turística.Assim, contextualiza-se a necessidade de edificar o Grande Hotel, e analisa-se o seu projeto, levantando-se hipóteses explicativas para a não edificação do mesmo.

The present dissertation concerns the study of the Coimbra’s Hotels in the past with special emphasis for the “Grande Hotel de Coimbra”. Projected in 1921 by the architect Eduard Ferrés i Puig, which was one of the larger and important projects ever idealized by that time in the national territory. More than a simple hotel, this projected represented an avid proposal for the modernization of the city, through the construction of a property equipped with top equipment. It was one of the most acclaimed and famous buildings and had the attention of the media and local voices for 4 years. However, despite what is mentioned in the architect's bibliography, the hotel was never built. This thesis intends to guide the reader to understand the “Grande Hotel de Coimbra”. It begins with the portrait of Portugal’s transition for the 21st century, describing the tourism’s very beginning and their hotel’s structures. Great part of the work speaks about Coimbra’s transition for the new century and the hotel’s development, with particular attention to the different types and the 20’s history. These consist of the main structures that provide accommodation in the area, stimulating the economic and cultural development of the city of Coimbra. However, these eight hotels were considered in a small number compare of a large tourist demand.In such a way that, it’s the moment to understand the necessity to build the “Grande Hotel” and the project’s analysis, revealing explanatory hypotheses for the hotel’s non-construction.
