International ownership strategy is one of the main objects of study in International Business. The relevance of this issue lies on the impact that a company’s international ownership strategy has on the success of its foreign operations and because of its implications regarding the investment needed, the amount of risk involved, the control over the venture and the investment return. The optimum level of ownership is that which offers the company the highest possible investment return. Its determination is influenced by innumerous factors, such as international experience of the multinational enterprise (MNE) and cultural distance between home and host countries. Recently, scholars have recommended studying the effect of the dimensions of the institutional environment on international ownership strategy. One of these dimensions is corruption. Thus, this dissertation investigates how corruption distance influences international ownership strategies of Portuguese and Spanish MNEs. We also seek to understand if cultural distance moderates the relationship between international ownership strategy and corruption distance. To explore this effect, we analyze data on share of equity of 3941 foreign subsidiaries located in 68 countries. The analysis is based on the estimation of Ordinary least square (OLS) regression. The results show that a higher corruption distance leads to a higher share of equity. However, when the host country is more corrupt than the home country, which means that there is a negative corruption distance between the two countries, MNEs seek a lower share of equity in local subsidiaries. Conversely, MNEs seek a higher share of equity when there is a positive corruption distance between the country of origin and the destination. Regarding the moderating effect of cultural distance, we do not detect any significant impact on the relationship between corruption distance and international ownership strategy. Regarding the Spanish subsidiaries only, the results meet the abovementioned conclusions. For the Portuguese companies and their subsidiaries, we do not detect any significant impact of corruption distance on their international ownership strategies. This dissertation contributes to an improved understanding of the impact of corruption distance on international ownership strategies, a relationship insufficiently known. Moreover, we found substantial evidence that the direction of corruption distance matters and influences the choices of MNEs.
