Abstract: The main objective of this dissertation is the study of natural radioactivity in groundwater samples collected at aquifer levels located in the southern sector of the Quaternary Aquifer System of Aveiro, in the Vouga River Basin and Ribeiras Costeiras. In this work, water samples were collected in ten holes that capture the levels of the Quaternary Aquifer system of Aveiro and measured the concentrations of 222Rn and alpha (α) and beta (β) radiations.Radon is a radioactive gas that has no color, smell or taste, and is soluble in water. This results from the decay of uranium and radio, elements naturally present in soils and rocks. Groundwater has a higher concentration of radon than surface water as it is released into the atmosphere when in contact with air.The values obtained for the concentrations of 222Rn present a variation between 1,2 Bq/L and 7,5 Bq/L. The concentration of alpha radiation varies between a minimum of 0,04 Bq/L and a maximum of 0,15 Bq/L and the Beta radiation concentration between 0,05 Bq/L and 0,12 Bq/L.Being a sedimentary zone, the values obtained are relatively low, as expected. They seem to vary in function of the mineralogy of the sediments and the physical-chemical parameters of the water, especially the electrical conductivity and the pH.The main objective of this dissertation is the study of natural radioactivity in groundwater samples collected at aquifer levels located in the southern sector of the Quaternary Aquifer System of Aveiro, in the Vouga River Basin and Ribeiras Costeras.
