Caracterização estética do sorriso de uma população universitária portuguesa após tratamento ortodôntico - estudo piloto.

Abstract

Introdução: A padronização da beleza é cada vez mais imposta pela sociedade, onde reina a estética, simetria e harmonia. Tendo em conta a relevância atribuída à estética em Medicina Dentária atualmente, sente-se necessidade de caracterizar o sorriso através de parâmetros universais de beleza, estética e harmoniaObjetivos: Caracterizar a estética do sorriso de uma população universitária portuguesa, que tenha realizado tratamento ortodôntico, com base em vários índices e parâmetros descritos na literatura.Materiais e Métodos: Foram realizadas fotografias com uma máquina fotográfica calibrada a indivíduos de origem portuguesa, após tratamento ortodôntico, de acordo com um protocolo fotográfico estabelecido. Foi também realizada uma análise fotográfica com avaliação de parâmetros estéticos objetivos definidos, tais como: a posição da linha do sorriso, o tamanho e proporção dos dentes, entre outros parâmetros, de modo a tentar definir o que é normal na população universitária portuguesa.Implicações clínicas: Os resultados obtidos neste trabalho poderão ajudar os médicos dentistas a identificar os parâmetros mais importantes na caracterização estética.Resultados: Os parâmetros que mais contribuem para a caracterização estética do sorriso na população universitária portuguesa tratada ortodonticamente são, a simetria entre os zénites dos caninos maxilares, a simetria entre os bordos incisais dos incisivos laterais maxilares, a forma da linha do sorriso, a relação entre a linha do sorriso e o lábio inferior e a exposição dentária em repouso. Conclusão: São necessários mais estudos, tendo em conta as limitações do presente estudo piloto, para que possa ser possível a caracterização do sorriso após tratamento ortodôntico na população portuguesa.

Introduction: The standardization of beauty is increasingly imposed by society, associated with aesthetics, symmetry and harmony. Nowadays, the relevance attributed to aesthetics in dentistry is very high, that is why it is necessary to characterize the smile through universal parameters of beauty, aesthetics and harmony.Objectives: The aim of this study is to characterize the smile aesthetics in a Portuguese population that has undergone orthodontic treatment, based on several indices and parameters described in the literature.Materials and Methods: Photographs of individuals of Portuguese origin were taken, after orthodontic treatment, according to an established photographic protocol, through a calibrated photographic camera. A photographic analysis was performed evaluating defined objective parameters, such as, the position of the smile line, the size and proportion of the teeth, among other parameters, in order to try to define what is normal in the Portuguese population.Clinical Implications: The results obtained in this work will help dentists in the future to perform a better aesthetic analysis and treatment plan.Results: The parameters that most contribute to the aesthetic characterization of the smile in the Portuguese university population orthodontically treated are, the symmetry between the zeniths of the maxillary canines, the symmetry between the incisal edges of the maxillary lateral incisors, the shape of the smile line, the relation between the smile line and the lower lip and the dental exposure at rest.Conclusion: More studies are needed, having in perspective the limitations of the present pilot study, so that smile characterization after orthodontic treatment in the Portuguese population can be assessed.
