Abstract: Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyse the relation of perfectionism and sleepdifficulties, considering the role played in this relation of parents Perfectionism, and of sonsand their parents Repetitive Negative Thinking (RNT) and Psychological Distress (Stress andDepressive/Anxious symptoms). Methods: 219 higher education students (168 women), with a mean age of 20,65 years, answered the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scales of Frost et al. (MPS-F), of Hewitt andFlett (MPS-H&F) and Reduced Composite Scale (MPS-RC), the Perseverative ThinkingQuestionnaire (PTQ), the Depression, Anxiety and Stress scale (DASS) and five questions toevaluate the sleep difficulties. Results: 41,1% of the students reported that have “sometimes” sleep difficulties and 16,9%frequent. 50,2% slept 6-7 hours or less. 16,3% reported severe sleep-related functionalimpairment. Women, described more sleep difficulties, higher levels of Organization,Repetitive Negative Thinking and Psychological Distress (Total; Anxiety, Stress) and menperceived parents as high in Parental Expectations. With few exceptions, the sons’ RNT, DASS and Perfectionism were significantly andpositively correlated with the convergent scores of their parents. The Perfectionism iscorrelated with sleep difficulties and the relation between Doubts about Actions (DA) andsleep difficulties is a consistent finding in females and total sample. RNT and thePsychological Distress were the most consistent significant predictors of the sleep difficulties, particularly in women and the sons’ and parental perfectionism in men.Perfectionism (particularly DA) was also an initial predictor of sleep difficulties particularlyin females and total sample, but when the effects of RNT and Psychological Distress werecontrolled, its effect was null.Psychological Distress, RNT and Perfectionism were implicated in were implied in thelikelihood that students would report sleep difficulties. Maternal negative Perfectionism andthe perception of parental Perfectionism were associated with the severity of sleep difficulties.Sleep duration was inversely related to son’s and/or parental Perfectionism and to father’sAnxiety (total sample). Conclusions: Sons’ and parental Perfectionism are associated and are predictive of sons’sleep difficulties and short sleep duration, being also associated with sleep difficultiesseverity. When sons’ RNT and Psychological Distress are accounted for, these one are themost important predictors of sleep difficulties, particularly in females. Thus RNT andPsychological Distress appear to be underlying conditions of perfectionism and sleepdifficulties link in these subjects.
16,3% descreveu grave Prejuízo Funcionaldecorrente do sono.
