Jorge Ferreira de Vasconcelos: a comédia, a cidade e a corte

Abstract

Due to its Italian genesis, the main set of action in Renaissance comedy is the city. Therefore, the three comedies written by Jorge Ferreira de Vasconcelos take place in this set of action. In these comedies, the city is represented as a social atmosphere, a behavioral system, a set of very diverse daily practices. The subtleness connecting both materiality and illusion, the function-sir and the function-author, creates the dynamics of the city in Jorge Ferreira de Vasconcelos’ comedies.
