The artistic residence GlogauAIR located in the dynamic city of Berlin, was founded in 2006 by the Spanish artist Chema Alvargonzález. The drive that was in the origin of this non-profit organization steamed from Chema’s way of life itself. Since ever deeply fascinated by the creative and communicative potentialities of art, enthusiastic about a nomad lifestyle, through which Chema himself collected meaningful and varied knowledge and perspectives. Having witnessed in first-hand the fall of the Berlin wall and the first steps towards a globalized world, the Spanish artist saw in the foundation of an artistic residence the ideal place to encourage the artistic dialogue. In this way, by hosting artists coming from the most varied social and cultural contexts, the innate innovative power of art would be potentiated an openness towards multiple discourses, thus creating a privileged intersection particularly fruitful where to freely exercise a creative and critical spirit. However, the project has been facing a number of setbacks, delaying and weakening its growth. Adding to the fact that GlogauAIR is located in an ancient building dating from the 19th century that is constantly requiring repairs, the staff is composed by only three people (Artistic director, Project Coordinator and Technical Support) helped by interns from different branches that are constantly rotating, the struggle financial hardships is a constant challenge, along with the unimaginable pressuring situation caused by the immense competition existent in the cultural sector of Berlin. However, after having gone through intense struggles, managing a chronical lack of resouces, GlogauAIR seems now to be gaining a new vitality. Apparently, the residence is strategically being prepared to go through a phase of a steady progressive growth, more open towards the community, which will hopefully turn a quite hermetic place of artistic production into one through which art communicates. This current report reflects the experience of a six-month period internship at GlogauAIR. Here, I try to intertwine practical knowledge gained in loco and the theoretical knowledge received by researching about the topics related to the many challenges faced by the residence on a daily-basis. Hence, this study is not only meant to be a mere description, but a critical analysis of the experience in the Berliner cultural scene, from the perspective of managing, programming and curating an artistic residence. Ultimately, the present report offers an overview of a real case-study, while putting forward some possible ideas on how to materialize and structure a concept, but mainly on how to maintain the project stable and operative on a long-term basis, by briefly exploring various action plans put into practice in the cultural management branch and which could hypothetically lead to find a solution.
