O limite urbano do Açude de Mértola: O novo centro de interpretação do Guadiana

Abstract

Desde cedo na história que a urbe de Mértola foi uma referência naregião do Alentejo, particularmente durante a ocupação romana e islâmica,sendo um ponto de influência comercial pela forte relação com o Rio Guadiana,a via de circulação entre o mar Mediterrâneo e o Sudoeste da Península Ibérica.Integrada no tema “Arquitectura e Memória” da disciplina de Atelier deProjeto II, o contexto da presente dissertação surge de uma intervenção alargadana vila de Mértola, que pretende pela sua interpretação, o desenvolvimento deprogramas que a valorizem do ponto de vista patrimonial, cultural e social nacontemporaneidade.Após a compreensão da história urbana e arquitectónica da vila e dasua extensão ao arrabalde da Achada de S. Sebastião, surge a necessidade decriar novas relações, novas interpretações, para a integração do arrabalde naestrutura urbana da vila. Esta interpretação fomenta o desenvolvimento doprograma do parque desportivo como continuidade do desenho urbano e odesenvolvimento do novo Centro de Monitorização e Interpretação Ambientaldo Parque Natural do Vale do Guadiana associado a um jardim botânicoque integra os elementos da paisagem natural do concelho Mértola. O temada integração do património natural na experiência citadina, advém da forterelação da vila com o Rio Guadiana e a sua influente caracterização paisagísta,como incentivo à sua valorização e preservação. Ao deslocar a sede do Parque,atualmente situada na Casa do Lanternim, para o limite do Arrabalde, pretendeseque esta valorização do património natural adquira o seu próprio valor noespaço urbano, libertando o interior da vila muralhada para o desenvolvimentodo programa museológico do Campo Arqueológico de Mértola e potênciandonovas valências programáticas na sua periferia.

Since the early history, the city of Mértola was a reference in the regionof Alentejo, particularly during the roman and islamic ocupation, being areference point by it’s comercial influence due to the strong relashionship withthe Guadiana river, that was the circulation road between the Mediterraneansea and the Southweast Iberian Peninsula territory.Integrated in the “Arquitectura e Memória” theme of the subjectAtelier de Projeto II, the context of the present dissertation comes up by theextended intervention on Mértola’s village, that by is interpretation, intendsthe development of programs that value the patrimonial, cultural and socialheritage of the village.After the historical and current comprehension, of the village and itsextension to the suburban area of the Achada de S. Sebastião, from the urbanand architectural point of view, the necessity of creating new relationshipsraises, as new interpretations for the integration of the extended area in theurban structure of Mértola. This interpretation encourages the development ofthe sporty urban-park program as a continuity of the urban system, and theproposal of the new Interpretation Center of the Parque Natural do Vale doGuadiana, associated with a botanic garden, that integrate the different elementsof the natural landscape of Mértola’s county. The integration theme of the naturalheritage in the city everyday life is influenced by the strong relationship betweenthe village and the river and is powerful natural characterization, as an incentivefor is appreciation and preservation. By moving the actual headquarters of theNatural Park organization, currently placed in the Lanternim house, to the limitof the perimeter of the suburban area, it is intended that this natural heritageacquire is own value in the urban espace, releasing the interior of the wall ofthe village for the continuity of the development of the Campo Arqueológico deMértola museological program and exposing new programs in the peripheralarea.
