Património e Cidade, um Espelho da Contemporaneidade

Abstract

Se património vem do latim patrimonium (patri, pai + monium, recebido), está intimamente ligado com o conceito de herança, remetendo-nos para três dimensões distintas: o passado, que constitui tudo que aconteceu e não pode ser alterado; a memória, operador para a rescrita do que aconteceu, que traduz, portanto, o que do passado ainda persiste; a história, cuja essência é selecionar o que aconteceu no passado para criar uma narrativa coerente. A questão está em perceber onde começa e termina a história, o que e por que é que a memória guarda e a partir de quando já é passado. Esta visão permite-nos acreditar que só é património o que interessa a alguém, o que nos interroga, aquilo em que queremos acreditar. Só é património o que nos faz pensar quem somos e para onde vamos, o que nos identifica. Deste modo, falar de património é falar de identidade e dos valores que nos definem enquanto indivíduos e atores de um espaço social que não é (só) nosso: a cidade. O crescimento e desenvolvimento das cidades deve, por isso, pressupor a sensibilidade e a preocupação de transmitir às gerações futuras o que recebemos como herança – só há a tão desejada sustentabilidade quando a gestão do património está integrada na estratégia de intervenção nas cidades. O conceito e a abordagem da paisagem urbana histórica e a proposta de estratégia da UNESCO incluem esta perspetiva, mas importa perceber até que ponto a cidade contemporânea está recetiva e preparada para um desenvolvimento integrado, onde o património é a própria cidade e, portanto, é espelho de contemporaneidade.

Heritage is intimately connected with the concept of inheritance, referring us to three different dimensions: past, which constitutes everything that happened and can not be altered; memory, an operator for a rewriting of what happened, which translates, therefore, what there is for the matter still persists; History, a matter of essence and a description of the event to create a coherent narrative. The question lies in understanding where the History begins and ends, what memory keeps and why and from when on do we consider having the past. This approach allows us to believe that it is only heritage when we have interest in it, what questions us, what we want to believe. It is only heritage what makes us think about who we are and where we are going, what identifies us. In this way, talking about heritage implies talking about the identity and the values ​​that define us as individuals and actors in a social space which is not (only) ours: the city. Thus, the growth and the development of the cities should presuppose sensitivity and the concern in transmitting what we have received as inheritance to future generations - we will only be able to reach the much desired sustainability when the heritage management will be integrated in the intervention strategy in the cities.The approach and the concept of Urban Historic landscape and the UNESCO’s strategy proposal include this perspective, but it is important to understand how far the contemporary city is receptive and prepared to an integrated development, in which the heritage is the city itself and thus the mirror of contemporaneity.
