Bissaya Barreto was an influential regional politician, a historic republican and Salazar’s intimate friend throughout 5 decades, during which dominated the sanitary intervention in Beira Litoral’s territory. Being a physician with freemasonry roots, his spiritual profile together with a collective moral were fueled into a political and sanitary plan, implemented in his region, with Estado Novo’s backup. Supported by different healthcare intervention models consolidated between the nineteenth and the twentieth century, Bissaya Barreto materialized a holistic and systemic vision to which propaganda, prophylaxis and territorial dissemination were crucial. But it was architecture the fundamental axis to consolidate a network of facilities dedicated to healthcare, in which the buildings were looked as hygienic devices and authentic cure temples. |
