Title: | Ética em fim de vida | Authors: | Aguiar, Teresa Beatriz Cordeiro Almeida | Orientador: | Verissimo, Manuel Teixeira Marques Simões, José Augusto Rodrigues |
A quem
processo de extinção The application of scientific progress in Medicine has increased the average life expectancy. The individual is offered more time to live, making illness eternal and transforming death, an inevitable ending, into a “dying process”. What Humans tend to forget is that not everything that is scientifically possible is also ethically acceptable; today’s society is forced to handle with this new issue, which is extending people’s lifetime, without knowing what solutions to give to the main problems that affect the individual at this stage. One of them is certainly the fear of death. As a result, many patients wish to have control over it, deciding the moment and the specific circumstances of its occurrence. This explains the appearance of so many requests of euthanasia/assisted suicide, as well as the wish to suspend treatments that the patient considers to be useless, since they don’t have any other benefit apart from extending the patient’s life. Should the doctor respond to these requests as a form of respect for the person’s autonomy? What is supposed to be the difference between the two mentioned procedures, which have as a final consequence the shortening of a person’s existence? And what happens when the patient is not autonomous? Who is entitled to the power of making this therapeutic decision? This work aimed at reviewing the most recent literature concerning these topics, by approaching concepts that will help understand them more clearly, and by consolidating ideas that will contribute to clarify the scientific community as well as the population in general. Thus, the objective is to remind the society of its responsibilities towards the dying patients, promoting an ethical reflection about matters that are likely to affect them, and also trying to reach an agreement, which is necessary in order to provide patients with the best possible quality of life, promoting the feelings of tranquility and acceptation of the extinction process |
