As plantas e sua simbologia na arte sacra portuguesa dos séculos XVI e XVII: um olhar sob a coleção do Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro em Coimbra

Abstract

RESUMO: Este artigo apresenta alguns contributos para a descodificação e interpretação das plantas representadas na coleção de pintura portuguesa dos séculos XVI e XVII, da exposição permanente do Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro em Coimbra. Para tanto, procedeu-se a utilização do método Panofsky de análise iconográfica e iconológica, resultando num mapeamento das plantas representadas em cinco pinturas da coleção. As cinco obras analisadas foram selecionadas respeitando um conjunto de critérios que possibilitassem uma leitura uniformizada, naturalmente considerando os aspectos técnico-estilísticos, mas predominando na observação o caráter simbólico-iconográfico dos elementos representados na pintura. Por fim, procedeu-se a preparação de um “quadro de síntese conceitual”, reunindo, classificando e relacionando as plantas representadas, seus significados simbólicos e as referências iconográficas e/ou bíblicas que sustentam esta interpretação como paradigmas de sua simbólica. ABSTRACT: This article presents some contributions for the decoding and interpretation of plants represented in the collection of Portuguese painting from the 16th and 17th centuries of the permanent exhibition of the National Museum of Machado de Castro in Coimbra. For that, Panofsky method of iconographic and iconological analysis was used, resulting in a mapping of the plants represented in five paintings in the collection. The works analyzed were selected, respecting a set of criteria that allowed a standardized reading, naturally considering the technical-stylistic aspects, but prevailing the observation of the symbolic-iconographic character of the elements represented in the painting. Finally, a "conceptual synthesis table" was prepared, gathering, classifying and relating the represented plants, their symbolic meanings and the iconographic and/or biblical references that support this interpretation as paradigms of their symbolism.
