Costelas de Adão: a desacreditação dos depoimentos femininos na Inquisição portuguesa

Abstract

It is not new that the ecclesiastical judicial sources contain a strong potential for the study of women in early modern times. However, there are still gaps in historiography about the factors that contributed to the unfeasibility of their testimonies in court. This article is devoted to this problem. The legal perception of the female testimony by the inquisitorial court and by the society itself will be analyze through the denunciations of solicitatio ad turpia made to the Portuguese Inquisition between 1640 and 1750.
