In the arts field, along with many other areas of social life, it is notorious the growing popularity of practices and discourses pointing to the advantages of activity organized in networks of structured and formalized cooperation. However, despite the recognized virtues of networking, it is important not to lose sight that, in multiple sectors, this kind of cooperation brings with it challenges and complex dilemmas. In addition, the financial, organizational and political conditions under which the networking processes are sustained also determine variable potentialities and constraints. This paper addresses these issues based on a study focused on a Portuguese network – the 5 Sentidos (5 Senses) network – that integrated, in its original formation, five organizations: Centro Cultural Vila Flor (Guimarães), Teatro Municipal da Guarda, Teatro Municipal Maria Matos (Lisbon), Teatro Virgínia (Torres Novas) and Teatro Viriato (Viseu). This network was constituted as a formal partnership between organizations for cultural programming in the performing arts domain. In addition to documental and statistical analysis, the research included also interviews with an extensive set of participants in the process concerning the formation and development of the network. The study addressed the main areas that the networking experience implies exploring the potentialities, the dilemmas and the tensions that arise from this inter-institutional cooperation experience.
