The main goal of this study is the improvement of springback prediction in multi-stage sheet metal forming processes. The method adopted consists in the simulation of the various processes undertaken by the blank (stamping, cutting and flanging) with different combinations for the numerical parameters available in AutoForm®, in order to control all the stamping process. The study is performed considering a high strength steel sheet (HX) that presents orthotropic properties. The selected numerical parameters (radius penetration, max element angle, initial element size and max refinement level) were analyzed separately and their influence in springback prediction was analyzed based on the comparison with the reference geometry for the selected component. The analysis indicates a strong interaction between the selected parameters. The subsequent study performed, based on the comparison of the experimental results with numerical ones, allowed to conclude that the parameter that had the most influence is the initial element size. The results shows that the adoption of a smaller initial finite element size permits the improvement of the precision in springback prediction. Nevertheless, this corresponds to higher computation costs and virtual space demands. Thus, the recommended refinement (with an initial finite element size of 5 and a maximum refinement level of 5) presents the best compromise between precision and cost. Industry prefers to gain in results improvement as long as the computational costs remains within admissible values. |
