Currently the preservation of library collections in libraries and archives has deserved an increasing interest, because of the risk of their deterioration and instability. This thesis is in this context that, aiming to characterize and analyze the environmental conditions that Casa-Forte of the UC General Library has for the preservation of its bibliographic valuable patrimony. Thus this work aims to assess the indoor ambient of the Casa-Forte, particularly the hygrothermal conditions, because it is known they can be the primary responsible factors for the deterioration of the collections, also favoring the development of microorganisms and the emergence of insects. There is some consensus regarding the values of the air temperature and relative humidity recommendable for the conservation of library collections, typically ranging between 18 ºC and 22 °C and between 45% and 55%, respectively. However, there are not "ideal values”, since the spaces under analysis may be very different from one another. Upon completion of this study, it was found that the relative humidity inside the vault had almost always very high values compared to the recommended reference, except for one only period. One can conclude that, if there were a regular maintenance of the dehumidifiers, and if they were adjusted and monitored strictly and regularly, indoor ambient conditions could be significantly improved and approached to the recommended ranges, particularly the air relative humidity. Regarding the indoor air temperature, this study showed a reasonable thermal behavior of that space; only in some time intervals the measured values go out of the recommended range. Finally, a few suggestions are provided, in order to provide more suitable conditions for the preservation of the library patrimony in Casa-Forte of the UC General Library.
