The main objective of this study was to assess the possibility of applying CAD tools (more particularly, Autodesk® ROBOT™ Structural Analysis Professional 2014) to the modelling, analysis and design phases of light steel structures of the stick-built type. Another objective was to determine if such tools, when combined with the European partial factor method, may be an alternative to the prescriptive method, which is the most common procedure used for this type of structures and, in the positive case, if it is more advantageous that the method. The conclusions withdrawn from the dissertation, are that this type of tools can be used, they are an alternative to the prescriptive method and they appear to be more effective and robust than that method. These conclusions were supported in the three phase study developed in the dissertation: (i) computational modelling of light steel structures, (ii) idealisation, analysis and design of structural members of light steel buildings, and (iii) idealisation, analysis and design of light steel structures. In the first phase a method was established for the development of computational models of light steel structures, based on procedures and practical rules for modelling their members. These procedures and rules consider the load paths, the support conditions and the connections between structural members (distributed and in line philosophy). The second phase consisted in the individual study of the macro-elements which form this type of structures, i.e. wall plates and floor slabs, in order to assess the application of the computational modelling methodology and compare the two alternative design methodologies. The last phase dealt with safety, having into account the constraints due to the building spatial idealization and also other difficulties and complexities associated to its modelling
