The technological development that we are seeing combined with the environmental awareness, leads to a constant evolution of the HVAC systems. We are primarily looking for thermal comfort in buildings, with systems more and more efficient and less expensive. Thus, a partnership between the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Coimbra, in the context of the Sustainable Campus strategy, promoted by the EfS initiative of UC, appears with the objective of address energetic problems and internal air quality that were found on the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra. After a study of the building characteristics and collect all the problems, this dissertation focus, mainly, on the HVAC system, on the indoor air quality and on the ventilation system. Inside the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra was chosen the 2nd floor of the building on which is expected to obtain a significant reduction the energy consumption and a raise of the thermal comfort felt by the users. We are looking to conceive and resize a central HVAC system, unattached from the original already installed, with the installation of one chiller/heat pump and the implementation of demand control ventilation through CO2. It’s expected that the new system will be efficient, with low carbon emission and effective for the classrooms and auditoriums of the FFUC. With an initial investment of 31.500€, the annual consumption of the HVAC system is expect to be around 14.500€. This way, is expected to obtain comfort conditions in a set of spaces that at this moment, lack of heating, cooling and ventilation quality.
