dc.description.abstract | This work intends to follow up on the thesis entitled "Hydrodynamic cavitation for water treatment" written by Mário da Silva Gomes in 2015. Being one of the most recent methods explored in the field of water treatment, hydrodynamic cavitation turns out to be an economically and environmentally attractive alternative. This phenomenon consists of the formation, growth and collapse of bubbles as a result of a local pressure decrease below vapor pressure for the local conditions, caused by the passage of a flow on a constraint. Despite the success of this method on laboratory scale operation, its transition to industrial scale wasn’t yet achieved. Such transition depends on a deeper knowledge about the phenomenon in order to manipulate correctly the geometric and operating parameters of cavitation reactors. The main goals of this work were the study of hydrodynamic cavitation occurrence conditions for different constraints configurations and the recording and evaluation of the fluidic structures created during the phenomenon. To achieve that, an experimental set-up was used to study the phenomenon. Its test section allowed a manual configuration of the constraints by changing their geometry, amount and arrangement. The results showed that the geometry, as well as the addition of a constraint, led to different dynamic conditions for the incipience of cavitation and affected the shape of the fluid dynamic formations created by cavitation. Therefore, the necessity arises to continue the research, aiming at the development of an optimal design for hydrodynamic cavitation generation with better efficiency and able to be transposed to industrial scale. | por |
