The incidence of psychological symptomatology in children in Portugal continues to rise with profound implications regarding the health of both children and their families. Thus, it is important to understand what mothers think and how they feel about it. The present study, based on the Grounded methodology, intends to study this phenomenon. As such, a Grounded Theory is constructed from the perspective of eight mothers on the psychological problems of their children including the beliefs they have on their children’s problems and the interference those beliefs may have on the children’s evolution. The mothers were interviewed at the clinic where their children are being followed. The results show a Core Category – “Narcissistic Wound” – and nine main categories: "Loss of the Ideal Child", "Culpability Dimension”, "Recognition of Failure as a Mother", "Acceptance Dimension", "Experience at the Clinic, "Mother’s Relationship with Other Relatives of the Child”, "Experiences of the Child’s Other Relatives", “Positive Evolution” and “Child’s Future”. From here on, one can conclude that the perception mothers have of their children is one mainly centred on the child’s symptoms, since it involves the mother in her narcissism and in the narcissitic investment on the child. There is also evidence that the relationship between mothers and other family members influence the way they deal with the children’s problems, and this in turn influences the manner in which the attitudes and thoughts of those relatives towards the children are perceived. The results are considered positive seeing that the theory constructed by the mothers has a positive impact on the children’s symptoms. The mothers’ involvement in the psychotherapeutic process of their children is a key factor in the promotion of an acceptance of the situation on behalf of the mother and therefore leads to a positive outcome for the children. As such, this investigation puts forward useful conclusions for future studies and recommendations for child psychotherapy practice. |
