This paper analyses a case of antilusitanism that took place in the state of Pará, in the 1870’s, using mostly Portuguese periodicals and consular documentation available at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal (Lisbon) as its research base. The assassination of some Portuguese emigrants, mostly retailers with some influence in the local economy, brought to light, in that state, a far-reaching movement of nationalist nature and of contestation to the presence of foreigners, mostly against Portuguese people. The documentation makes it possible to grasp some of the foundations of this type of movement (forms of competition at the level of the labor market between the Portuguese and the Brazilian, the numerical importance of Portuguese citizens in retail trade and in trade along the Amazon river, the role of the press and its main mentors, among other aspects), attesting to the political and ideological instrumentalization of this case by forces that opposed the ruling regime.
