The weight of the bones is affected by several factors, such as age, sex, diseases, heredity or environment. The goal of this dissertation was the study of the weight of a sample of 70 individuals which belong to the Collection of Identified Skeletons of the 21st century from University of Coimbra in which we evaluated the differences between individuals of different sex, the evolution of weight in relation to age, and influence of the general preservation index (IPG), the effect that postmortem interval (IPM) and bone mineral density (DMO) have on skeletal weight. In addition to this, it was also evaluated the relationship between the weight of the skull, femur and humerus and the total weight of the skeleton. One of the major goals of this dissertation was realizing if it would be possible to estimate the weight of the skeleton through the humerus or femur, for which we used linear regression equations. As expected, the weight of the skeletons of females is higher than in relation to the male. Also, with the advancement of age is noted a decrease in weight. There is a weak link between the weight and the IPG, but it is possible to observe that the less preserved skeletons have a lower weight compared to the better preserved ones. There is no relationship between the postmortem interval and weight. For the DMO, the women and elderly individuals, obtain lower results. Besides, individuals with lower weight also show a lower BMD. The weight of the skull, femur and humerus, have a strong relationship with the total weight. The studied prevision method seems to work, but when applied to the test specimen, it appears to show some discrepancies in relation to the actual weight. In the future, it will be necessary to extend the sample and try this method in different collections. It would also be useful to study how other variables relate to the weight of the skeleton, in order to study a way to predict the total weight of the skeleton applicable in different series.por
