Title: | Reconstrução crítica do Anfiteatro Romano de Conímbriga | Authors: | Medeiros, Miguel Lopes Frazão de | Orientador: | Providência, Paulo | Keywords: | Anfiteatro romeno, Conímbriga | Issue Date: | Jul-2016 | Abstract: | Foi há mais de dois mil anos que a cidade romana de Conimbriga ganhou
recuperar o perímetro da muralha augusta, o que dá outras leituras a Conimbriga;
Over two thousand years ago, the Roman city of Conimbriga gained a larger dimension, both at economical and urbanistic levels. A series of buildings and public facilities were built, improving the living standards. The city suffered, over the centuries, several modifications until its invasion by the Barbarians, who conquered the city, at the second attempt, in the year 468. Conimbriga, suffered several invasions to the eighth century (arab invasion), however, in 878, with the reconquest of the territory of Coimbra by King Afonso III of Asturias, the oppidum of Conimbriga was abandoned by the few people that still lived in the ruins. They lurked throughout the Middle Ages in a village they founded, north of the plateau, later called Condeixa, and afterwards renamed Condeixa-a-Velha. It is precisely in this village where the ruins of the Roman Amphitheatre of Conimbriga are located. These, consisting of two sets of three vaults at each end of the major axis, are implanted in a topographic bowl with a slope of 15 meters from the top of the plateau. The proposal of the Critical Reconstruction of the Roman Amphitheatre of Conimbriga is based on the ruins, creating a new volumetry that interprets the ancient amphitheater. This new structure solves several problems of the archaeological site, such as: retrieve the perimeter of the augustian walls, which gives other viewing points of Conimbriga; strengthening the ancient connection route along the coast to Lisbon; creating an urban equipment that allows the realization of shows of various types; allowing a clearer reading on the amphitheater appropriation processes after the fourth century, through the construction of dwellings on the building. Furthermore, this project is justified by the necessity of a better articulation of visit courses integrating Condeixa-a-Velha. This new building, which interprets the ruin and the exceptional implementation of the ancient Roman Amphitheater of Conimbriga, besides having its own autonomy, is part of a global intervention strategy over the archaeological site. |
