Avaliação da acupunctura sobre o sistema imunitário

Abstract

A acupunctura é praticada em todo o mundo como um tratamento complementar à medicina convencional. No entanto, ainda pouco se sabe sobre os mecanismos fisiológicos da acupunctura sobre o sistema imunitário. Neste trabalho, pretende-se avaliar e identificar os efeitos da acupunctura sobre o sistema imunitário através da imunofenotipagem, utilizando a citometria de fluxo. Para isto, recorreu-se a voluntários que foram submetidos a punctura durante três semanas e aos quais foi retirado sangue antes e após a punctura para análise de possíveis alterações nos valores de imunofenotipagem. O estudo foi elaborado com base em 22 voluntários jovens e saudáveis. No início e no final do estudo foram feitas colheitas de sangue, de 5 ml, cada, num total de duas colheitas, para imunofenotipagem com citometria de fluxo. Cada individuo foi submetido durante três semanas a três sessões de acupunctura por semana num total de nove tratamentos nos pontos: 11BX, 17BX, 23BX, 39VB, 36ES. Com este estudo pudemos concluir que a acupunctura não parece alterar significativamente os níveis de linfócitos nas amostras de sangue com base na comparação dos valores da imunofenotipagem antes e após a punctura. Este resultado parece-nos importante no sentido em que, ao demonstrar o papel não prejudicial da acupunctura em pessoas sem doença, evidencia o possível potencial da acupunctura como complemento à medicina ocidental em doentes sem os possíveis efeitos secundários associados aos tratamentos farmacológicos.

Acupuncture is practiced worldwide as a complementary treatment to conventional medicine. However, little is known about the physiological mechanisms of acupuncture on the immune system. This study aims to assess and identify the effects of acupuncture on the immune system by immunophenotyping using flow cytometry. To this end, we resorted to volunteers that were subjected to puncture during three weeks and to which blood was taken before and after puncture for analysis of possible changes in the values of immunophenotyping. The study was based on 22 healthy volunteers. At the beginning and end of the study, blood samples were taken, 5 ml each, a total of two harvests for immunophenotyping with flow cytometry. Each individual was subjected for three weeks to three sessions per week in a total of nine treatments with the puncture points: 11BX, 17BX , 23BX , 39VB , 36ES . With this study we concluded that acupuncture does not seem to significantly alter the levels of lymphocytes in blood samples based on comparison of the values of immunophenotyping before and after the puncture. This result seems to us important in the sense that, by demonstrating the non-injurious role of acupuncture in people without the disease, highlights the possible potential of acupuncture as a complement to ocidental medicine in patients without the possible side effects associated with the pharmacological therapies.
