dc.description.abstract | The sexual diagnosis done from the analysis of human remains is a key element in forensic investigation. A great number of studies has shown the existence of sexual dimorphism in almost every bone of the human skeleton. The human adult mandible is a particularly robust and solid element and is usually well preserved in forensic contexts. Nowadays, metric methods are the most used in sexual estimation due to their objectivity, accuracy, reproducibility and a low inter and intra degree error. This study was conducted with the intention of developing a method to sexual diagnosis of the mandible. For that 200 mandibles from the identified skull collection “Escolas Médicas” from the UC, which was used as a training sample, were analysed. Furthermore, 63 mandibles from the identified osteological collection of Santarém Estimativa do Sexo através de Características Métricas da Mandíbula 3 were analysed too, which was used as a test sample. 8 measures were made to each mandible. The statistical treatment was done based on the logistic regression technique. The correct percentage of classification attained was as follows: 80% related to the first sample and 76,5% to the second, which reflects some limitations of the use of the mandible in sex diagnosis. Key words: forensics anthropology; sexual estimate; sexual dimorphism; mandible; logistic regression | por |
