Constituem, portanto, a articulação do cotovelo esquerdo do indivíduo.
This paper proposes to study the human osteological remains buried in the Hypogea of Vale de Barrancas 1 (dated to the Late Neolithic), located in Berinjel, Beja, contributing to a more complete knowledge of the funeral reality of the prehistoric community that lived in this region, and its anthropological characteristics. The bone fragmentation observed, caused by multiple taphonomic factors, such as the fauna and flora, as well as the human intervention, limited our study. Still, we tried to trace the biological profile and the pathologies of the individual exhumed from these negative structures. The material of this study comes from human hypogea dated to the Late Neolithic (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8). In these graves the human bone spoils were recovered in primary and collective context, not being possible, however, to reconstruct all the funerary gestures of this population. It was detected the widespread use of ochre over the human osteological remains. It was identified adult and non-adult individuals, for whom it was calculated a MNI between 2 and 6 individuals in the first group, and between 1 and 8 in the second. Among the last, the most represented age group is the one between 5-9 years old (N=11). On the other hand, the sexual diagnosis data suggest a similar proportion between individuals of both sexes. Morphologically, stands out the presence of discrete characters such as the presence of hypotrocanteric fossa in the femurs of hypogea 1 (N=1/5), 2 (N=3/9), 7 (N=1/4) and 8 (N=3/6); as well as the 3rd trochanter in the femurs of Hypogeum 3 (N=2/5). In the paleopathological field, it stands out a case of osteoarthritis of maximum degree in the bones constituting the left arm of an individual from Hypogeum 3: distal end of the humerus and proximal ends of the radius and ulna. Therefore, they compose the individual’s left elbow joint. It were detected some pertinent differences between coeval studies of series from inland and coastal areas, namely at the level of dental pathology.
