Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether acupuncture was useful in the context of Rugby performance by the treatment of myofascial pain and by applying a protocol during the season to improve attention and visual memory as components of Information Processing Materials and Methods: A case-control study involving 12 college students of a male U21 rugby team was conducted throughout a season. Players registered the level of injury after the matches played. Subjects completed the STAI inventory, the Menvis and the Toulouse-Piéron tests before the season began. During the season practices an acupuncture protocol was applied once a week to half of the subjects, while other acupuncture treatments were made available to all team members. After the end of the season all testing was repeated. Results: Players registered a recovery of myofascial pain and range of motion before the following match. No differences in injury level were observed between both groups. A statistically significant improvement in visual memory and attentional speed, and a decrease in anxiety-state were observed in the 12 studied subjects, without statistically significant differences between the two groups. Discussion: Acupuncture replaced physiotherapy as the treatment of the players’ choice for myofascial pain with a reported resolution of pain and range of movement limitation. The practice of competitive sports seems to improve information processing, during a season. Conclusion: Acupuncture showed to be useful throughout the Rugby season as treatment for myofascial pain, despite no statistically significant improvement of Information Processing could be attributed to the acupuncture treatment protocol applied in the study.
