Title: | Actividade física e obesidade | Authors: | Monteiro, Ana Margarida Carvalho | Orientador: | Santos, Fernando | Keywords: | Exercício físico; Obesidade | Issue Date: | 2010 | Abstract: | Currently, physical inactivity is so prevalent that the exercise has been promoted as having health benefits. Instead, lack of exercise should rather be seen as abnormal for the human condition. Technological and economic incentives continue to encourage physical inactivity, because the technology reduces the energy expenditure of daily activities and active work is paid less than the sedentary work. Physical activity is now seen as the best investment in public health. Regular physical activity induces multiple adaptations in skeletal muscle and the cardiorespiratory system, with positive effect in prevention and treatment of many metabolic diseases. Increasing evidence has reported an inverse relationship between regular physical activity and diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, some cancers and depression.
The sedentary lifestyle and changes in eating habits of today's society have been blamed for the obesity epidemic, which has been observed throughout the world. The morbidity and mortality associated with physical inactivity and obesity reveal the need to promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles and effective treatment of overweight.
Regular physical activity is one of the cornerstones in the treatment of obesity. Contributes to the increase in total energy expenditure, for weight loss and is also a crucial element of success in long term maintenance of weight loss. In addition, improves cardio-respiratory fitness, reduces cardiovascular risks and promotes a feeling of well-being.
This work aims to make a review of the role of physical activity in obesity treatment by analyzing the quantity, type and intensity of physical activity needed in the process of weight loss and weight-loss maintenance.
The methodology for achieving this article was a survey of scientific articles that deal with these issues and available in two databases: PubMed and ScienceDirect Actualmente, a inactividade física é tão prevalente que o exercício tem sido promovido como detentor de efeitos benéficos na saúde. |
