Mulheres e trabalho em Coimbra (Portugal) no século XVIII e inícios do XIX

Abstract

Continuamos a ler em obras de Sociologia e de História da Idade Contemporânea (já para não referir a imprensa escrita e oral) que as mulheres entraram no mercado laboral durante o século XX ou finais do XIX e que até então estavam confinadas ao espaço doméstico. Trata-se de uma afirmação errónea que cabe aos modernistas continuar a desmentir. Propomo-nos abordar alguns aspetos do trabalho feminino na cidade portuguesa de Coimbra durante o século XVIII e princípios do XIX, utilizando documentação de origem municipal e de instituições caritativas. Serão destacadas artesãs, lojistas, vendedoras de mercado, funcionárias dos hospitais, amas de expostos, peticionárias de esmolas e ainda o caso de uma mulher de negócios de sucesso.

In the fields of sociology and contemporary history (not to mention the media) we persistently come across the argument that women entered the labour market in the twentieth century or the late nineteenth century and that until then they were confined to the household. This is an incorrect assertion that early modern historians should continue to refute. In this paper we will address some aspects of female work in the Portuguese city of Coimbra during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, exploring documentation from the City Hall and from charitable institutions. We will focus on female artisans, shopkeepers, market sellers, hospital employees, foundlings’ wet nurses as well as the case of a successful businesswoman.
