We will approach the history of early shopping malls and their appearance and development in major metropolitan areas worldwide. We will focus on the Portuguese case and, in two of the most important shopping malls/centers of Oporto city, specifically Via Catarina and Norte Shopping. The first one is positioned in the downtown area of Oporto as the second one belongs to a more peripheral area of this Portuguese Northern city. For both case studies we propose to address. The evolution and occupation of urban space, the economic flows and dynamics, the articulation of these apparatus with the traffic system as well as their influence on the local commerce and in the urban expansion; we will also discuss their specific economic success or failure.por
